If you crank the volume up here, every threshold reading will be skewed loud.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n<h3>Phase 2 \u2014 Testing<\/h3>\n\n<p>You&#8217;ll test six frequencies in order: <strong>250 Hz, 500 Hz, 1 kHz, 2 kHz, 4 kHz, 8 kHz<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<p>For each frequency:<\/p>\n\n<ol>\n  <li>Tap <strong>Play Tone<\/strong>.<\/li>\n  <li>Use the <strong>+<\/strong> and <strong>\u2212<\/strong> buttons to adjust the level (in dB).<\/li>\n  <li>Find the <strong>quietest level where you can still just barely hear the tone<\/strong>.<\/li>\n  <li>Tap <strong>Confirm This Level<\/strong> to lock it in and move to the next frequency.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n<p><strong>Tone Mode (Wave \/ Pulse):<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<ul>\n  <li><strong>Wave<\/strong> \u2014 continuous tone.<\/li>\n  <li><strong>Pulse<\/strong> \u2014 500 ms on, 500 ms off. Easier to distinguish from background noise or tinnitus.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p><strong>Advanced Options \u2014 Test Ear:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<ul>\n  <li>Expand <strong>Advanced Options<\/strong> to switch between <strong>Both Ears<\/strong>, <strong>Left Ear<\/strong>, or <strong>Right Ear<\/strong>.<\/li>\n  <li>Test each ear separately for a more detailed profile.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h3>Phase 3 \u2014 Summary<\/h3>\n\n<p>You&#8217;ll see your <strong>Hearing EQ Profile<\/strong> as a graph and per-frequency dB readings.<\/p>\n\n<ul>\n  <li>Tap <strong>Create Custom EQ from Test<\/strong> to save the profile and jump to the Noise Therapy tab.<\/li>\n  <li>Tap <strong>Reset Test<\/strong> to clear results and start over.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h2 id=\"noise-therapy\">Noise Therapy (White \/ Pink Noise)<\/h2>\n\n<p>Noise Therapy plays White or Pink noise with an EQ boost tailored to your hearing profile \u2014 frequencies you struggle to hear are boosted, up to +24 dB.<\/p>\n\n<h3>Noise Types<\/h3>\n\n<ul>\n  <li><strong>White Noise<\/strong> \u2014 equal energy at all frequencies. Bright, hissy, like TV static. Effective for masking high-pitched tinnitus.<\/li>\n  <li><strong>Pink Noise<\/strong> \u2014 equal energy per octave (3 dB-per-octave rolloff). Deeper, more balanced, like steady rainfall. More comfortable for extended listening and sleep.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h3>Controls<\/h3>\n\n<ul>\n  <li><strong>Play \/ Stop<\/strong> \u2014 start or stop playback.<\/li>\n  <li><strong>Volume slider<\/strong> \u2014 adjust loudness (0\u2013100%).<\/li>\n  <li><strong>Channel<\/strong> \u2014 choose where the sound plays:\n    <ul>\n      <li><strong>Both<\/strong> \u2014 standard stereo.<\/li>\n      <li><strong>Left<\/strong> \u2014 left ear only.<\/li>\n      <li><strong>Right<\/strong> \u2014 right ear only.<\/li>\n      <li><strong>Bounce<\/strong> \u2014 alternates between left and right every 3 seconds (useful for bilateral tinnitus stimulation).<\/li>\n    <\/ul>\n  <\/li>\n  <li><strong>Real-Time Analyzer<\/strong> \u2014 shows the frequency spectrum live while playing.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h3>Current EQ Section<\/h3>\n\n<p>The <strong>Current EQ<\/strong> panel shows your EQ boost profile based on your hearing test. Each test frequency shows how much boost (in dB) is being applied.<\/p>\n\n<blockquote>\n  <p><strong>&#8220;No hearing test data&#8221;?<\/strong> You need to run the Hearing Test first. Go to the Hearing Test tab and complete the test.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n<h2 id=\"nature-sounds\">Nature Sounds<\/h2>\n\n<p>Eight procedurally generated nature sounds you can play and layer in any combination:<\/p>\n\n<table>\n  <thead>\n    <tr>\n      <th>Sound<\/th>\n      <th>Description<\/th>\n    <\/tr>\n  <\/thead>\n  <tbody>\n    <tr>\n      <td><strong>Rain<\/strong><\/td>\n      <td>Steady rainfall with sparse droplet transients<\/td>\n    <\/tr>\n    <tr>\n      <td><strong>Ocean<\/strong><\/td>\n      <td>Slow rolling waves with a ~0.09 Hz modulation<\/td>\n    <\/tr>\n    <tr>\n      <td><strong>Lake<\/strong><\/td>\n      <td>Gentle lapping water and subtle ripples<\/td>\n    <\/tr>\n    <tr>\n      <td><strong>Fire<\/strong><\/td>\n      <td>Low rumble with random crackle pops<\/td>\n    <\/tr>\n    <tr>\n      <td><strong>Wind<\/strong><\/td>\n      <td>Band-passed gusts through trees<\/td>\n    <\/tr>\n    <tr>\n      <td><strong>Stream<\/strong><\/td>\n      <td>Burbling brook with intermittent gurgles<\/td>\n    <\/tr>\n    <tr>\n      <td><strong>Crickets<\/strong><\/td>\n      <td>Pulsed sine pair (4.5 kHz \/ 5.2 kHz) for a summer-night feel<\/td>\n    <\/tr>\n    <tr>\n      <td><strong>Waterfall<\/strong><\/td>\n      <td>Heavy continuous pink noise<\/td>\n    <\/tr>\n  <\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n\n<p>Each sound has its own play button and volume slider. <strong>You can layer multiple sounds together<\/strong> \u2014 try Rain + Fire, or Stream + Crickets.<\/p>\n\n<p>Tap <strong>Stop All<\/strong> at the bottom to silence everything at once.<\/p>\n\n<blockquote>\n  <p><strong>Tip:<\/strong> Nature sounds are mixed with <code>.mixWithOthers<\/code>, so they will play alongside other apps&#8217; audio if needed.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n<h2 id=\"music-eq\">Music EQ Recommendations<\/h2>\n\n<p>The Music tab compares your hearing profile to all 24 Apple Music EQ presets and recommends the best match.<\/p>\n\n<p>You&#8217;ll see:<\/p>\n\n<ul>\n  <li>The <strong>recommended preset name<\/strong> (e.g., &#8220;Treble Booster&#8221;, &#8220;Vocal Booster&#8221;).<\/li>\n  <li>A <strong>Match Analysis<\/strong> with your match percentage and a side-by-side comparison of bass \/ mid \/ treble boost between your profile and the preset.<\/li>\n  <li><strong>Other Good Matches<\/strong> \u2014 three alternative presets you can try.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h3>How to apply the recommended preset<\/h3>\n\n<p>The app cannot change Apple Music&#8217;s EQ for you \u2014 Apple requires you to do this manually:<\/p>\n\n<ol>\n  <li>Open the iOS <strong>Settings<\/strong> app.<\/li>\n  <li>Scroll to and tap <strong>Music<\/strong>.<\/li>\n  <li>Tap <strong>EQ<\/strong>.<\/li>\n  <li>Select the recommended preset from the list.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n<p>The preset will apply to <strong>all music played through the Apple Music app<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<blockquote>\n  <p><strong>&#8220;No hearing test data&#8221;?<\/strong> Run the Hearing Test first \u2014 the recommendation depends on your thresholds.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n<h2 id=\"audio-troubleshooting\">Audio &amp; Playback Troubleshooting<\/h2>\n\n<h3>I don&#8217;t hear anything<\/h3>\n\n<ul>\n  <li>Check that your device is <strong>not on silent mode<\/strong> (the Ring\/Silent switch on the side, or Control Center).<\/li>\n  <li>Make sure the <strong>device volume<\/strong> is turned up.<\/li>\n  <li>If using Bluetooth headphones, confirm they are connected and selected as the output (Control Center \u2192 AirPlay icon in the audio card).<\/li>\n  <li>For Noise Therapy: make sure you&#8217;ve <strong>completed the hearing test<\/strong> \u2014 playback is disabled until you have a saved profile.<\/li>\n  <li>Try switching to a <strong>different noise type<\/strong> or sound and back.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h3>The sound is too quiet (even at max volume)<\/h3>\n\n<ul>\n  <li>Re-do the <strong>calibration step<\/strong> at the start of the Hearing Test \u2014 your baseline may have been set too low.<\/li>\n  <li>In Noise Therapy, raise the in-app <strong>Volume slider<\/strong> to 100% and then raise device volume.<\/li>\n  <li>Check <strong>Settings \u2192 Music \u2192 EQ<\/strong> \u2014 an aggressive Treble Reducer or Bass Reducer can affect perceived loudness.<\/li>\n  <li>iOS <strong>Volume Limit<\/strong> (Settings \u2192 Sounds &amp; Haptics \u2192 Headphone Safety) can cap output. Disable or raise the limit.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h3>The sound is distorting \/ clipping<\/h3>\n\n<ul>\n  <li>Lower the in-app <strong>Volume slider<\/strong> in the Noise Therapy tab.<\/li>\n  <li>If your hearing profile shows very high thresholds (poor hearing) across the board, the EQ may be boosting some frequencies by +24 dB, which can clip at high volumes. Lower the volume slider to compensate.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h3>Audio cuts out when another app plays sound<\/h3>\n\n<ul>\n  <li><strong>Noise Therapy<\/strong> and the <strong>Hearing Test<\/strong> use exclusive audio (they will stop when other audio starts).<\/li>\n  <li><strong>Nature Sounds<\/strong> are set to mix with other audio \u2014 they should continue playing.<\/li>\n  <li>If audio cuts out unexpectedly, return to the app and tap <strong>Play<\/strong> again.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h3>Audio stops when I lock the screen<\/h3>\n\n<p>This is expected behavior in the current version. Keep the app open in the foreground to maintain continuous playback. Background audio support is being evaluated for a future update.<\/p>\n\n<h3>Bluetooth headphones have a delay \/ echo<\/h3>\n\n<ul>\n  <li>Bluetooth introduces latency that can make the RTA visualization look out of sync with what you hear \u2014 this is normal and does not affect the sound itself.<\/li>\n  <li>For the <strong>Hearing Test<\/strong>, wired headphones are strongly recommended for the most accurate results.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h2 id=\"hearing-test-troubleshooting\">Hearing Test Troubleshooting<\/h2>\n\n<h3>I can hear the tone even at the lowest level (\u221280 dB)<\/h3>\n\n<ul>\n  <li>You may be in a noisy environment \u2014 find a quieter room.<\/li>\n  <li>Your headphone volume may be set too high. Re-do calibration and pick a quieter baseline.<\/li>\n  <li>Some headphones have very high sensitivity. Try a different pair if available.<\/li>\n  <li>Keep lowering until you genuinely struggle to hear the tone, then confirm.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h3>I can&#8217;t hear the tone even at the loudest level (0 dB)<\/h3>\n\n<ul>\n  <li>Your device volume may be too low \u2014 turn it up before tapping Play Tone.<\/li>\n  <li>Make sure headphones are connected and you&#8217;ve selected the correct output device.<\/li>\n  <li>If you genuinely cannot hear at 0 dB, that&#8217;s a legitimate result \u2014 confirm and move on. The app will boost that frequency in the Noise Therapy tab.<\/li>\n  <li>If results seem unrealistic, consider consulting an audiologist (see <a href=\"#medical-disclaimer\">Medical Disclaimer<\/a>).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h3>Background noise is making it hard to tell<\/h3>\n\n<ul>\n  <li>Switch to <strong>Pulse mode<\/strong> (500 ms on \/ 500 ms off) \u2014 the on\/off pattern is easier to distinguish from constant background noise or tinnitus.<\/li>\n  <li>Move to a quieter room.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h3>The test results don&#8217;t feel accurate<\/h3>\n\n<ul>\n  <li>Re-do the calibration step \u2014 most accuracy issues come from baseline volume drift.<\/li>\n  <li>Use the same headphones throughout the test.<\/li>\n  <li>Try testing each ear separately via <strong>Advanced Options \u2192 Test Ear<\/strong>.<\/li>\n  <li>Retake the test on a different day \u2014 fatigue and ear pressure can affect thresholds.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h3>How do I retake the test?<\/h3>\n\n<ul>\n  <li>Go to the <strong>Hearing Test<\/strong> tab.<\/li>\n  <li>If you&#8217;re already on the Summary screen, tap <strong>Reset Test<\/strong>.<\/li>\n  <li>Otherwise, complete or skip through to the Summary and tap <strong>Reset Test<\/strong>, then start fresh from Calibration.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h2 id=\"general-troubleshooting\">General Troubleshooting<\/h2>\n\n<h3>The app crashed or froze<\/h3>\n\n<ul>\n  <li>Force-quit and reopen: swipe up from the bottom of the screen and swipe Noise Therapy off the top.<\/li>\n  <li>Restart your device.<\/li>\n  <li>Make sure you&#8217;re running the latest version from the App Store.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h3>I lost my hearing test results<\/h3>\n\n<p>Your hearing thresholds are stored on-device. They can be lost if:<\/p>\n\n<ul>\n  <li>You uninstalled and reinstalled the app.<\/li>\n  <li>You tapped <strong>Reset Test<\/strong> on the Summary screen.<\/li>\n  <li>You restored the device from a backup that didn&#8217;t include app data.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p><strong>Solution:<\/strong> re-run the Hearing Test.<\/p>\n\n<h3>My EQ recommendation changed<\/h3>\n\n<p>The Music EQ recommendation is recalculated every time you visit the Music tab, based on your current saved thresholds. If you retook the test, the recommendation will reflect the new profile.<\/p>\n\n<h3>Tab labels or text look cut off<\/h3>\n\n<ul>\n  <li>Try rotating the device.<\/li>\n  <li>Increase or decrease the system text size in <strong>Settings \u2192 Display &amp; Brightness \u2192 Text Size<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h2 id=\"privacy\">Privacy &amp; Data<\/h2>\n\n<ul>\n  <li><strong>All hearing test data is stored locally on your device<\/strong> using <code>UserDefaults<\/code>.<\/li>\n  <li>Noise Therapy does <strong>not<\/strong> transmit your hearing profile, audio, or any personal information off-device.<\/li>\n  <li>The app does not require an account or sign-in.<\/li>\n  <li>Nature sounds are generated procedurally in real time \u2014 no audio files are downloaded.<\/li>\n  <li>The app does not access your music library or Apple Music account; the Music tab only <strong>recommends<\/strong> an EQ preset that you apply yourself in iOS Settings.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h2 id=\"medical-disclaimer\">Medical Disclaimer<\/h2>\n\n<p><strong>Noise Therapy is not a medical device and is not a substitute for a professional hearing evaluation.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p>The Hearing Test is a self-administered, informal screening designed to personalize the app&#8217;s audio output.
