Getting Started

What does Speak N Speed HUD do?

Speak N Speed HUD turns your iPhone into a heads-up display (HUD) for driving, boating, flying, or any other moving activity. It shows:

• Your current speed in large, easy-to-read digits
• A speed bar that changes color (green → yellow → red) as you approach the speed limit
• Your compass direction (N, NE, E, SE, S, SW, W, NW)
• The current time
• Left and right turn indicators that light up automatically when you turn
• Spoken speed announcements in several voice modes
• A 0-60 timer that records and saves your runs

How do I use it?

1. Open the app and tap Allow when iOS asks for location access.
2. Choose your preferred unit at the top: MPH, KM/H, or M/S.
3. Pick a voice mode at the bottom (or leave it Off).
4. Place your iPhone on the dash and start driving. The screen will stay on automatically.

For best results, lay the phone flat on the dash or mount it where you can glance at it without taking your eyes off the road.

Speed & Accuracy

Why is the speed lagging behind what I’m doing?

Your iPhone’s GPS only reports speed about once per second. The app smoothly animates between readings, but the displayed value can lag real-world changes by up to a second. This is a hardware limit on every iPhone — not something the app can speed up.

For best accuracy:

• Drive at a steady speed when checking the reading
• Give the display a moment to catch up after accelerating or braking
• Make sure you have a clear view of the sky (open sky = better GPS)

What’s the difference between “GPS” and “Corrected”?

• MPH (GPS) / KM/H (GPS) — the raw speed reported by your iPhone’s GPS.
• MPH (Corrected) / KM/H (Corrected) — the GPS speed multiplied by ~1.04 to better match the speedometer in most cars. Most car speedometers read about 3–5% high by design, so this view often matches what you see on the dashboard.

If you want to know your actual speed, use the GPS view. If you want a reading that matches your car’s speedometer, use the Corrected view.

The speed shows 0 even though I’m moving

Try these in order:

1. Check location permission. Go to Settings → Privacy & Security → Location Services → Speak N Speed. Make sure it’s set to While Using the App (or Always).
2. Make sure Location Services is on globally at Settings → Privacy & Security → Location Services.
3. Get a clear view of the sky. GPS doesn’t work well indoors, in tunnels, in parking garages, or surrounded by tall buildings. Step outside or drive into the open and wait 10–30 seconds for a fix.
4. Toggle Airplane Mode off and on, then reopen the app.
5. Restart your iPhone if GPS still isn’t responding.

The speed jumps around or shows weird values

This is almost always a weak GPS signal. Tall buildings, heavy tree cover, tunnels, and bad weather all reduce accuracy. Move to an open area, and the reading should stabilize within a few seconds.

The speed shown is different from my car’s speedometer

This is normal. Car speedometers are designed by manufacturers to read slightly higher than your actual speed (usually 3–5%). GPS speed is closer to your true ground speed. Try the Corrected view if you want a number that more closely matches your dashboard.

Voice Announcements

How do I turn voice on?

Tap Speak Every 1 or Speak Every 10 at the bottom of the screen.

• Speak Every 1 announces your speed every time it changes by 1 unit (e.g., “30”, “31”, “32”…)
• Speak Every 10 announces only at round multiples of 10 (e.g., “30”, “40”, “50”…)

Tap Off to silence voice announcements.

I can’t hear the voice

• Turn up your iPhone’s volume using the side buttons.
• Check the silent / ring switch on the side of your phone. The app uses the speech system, which respects this switch on most devices.
• Disconnect and reconnect Bluetooth if you’re paired to a car stereo or speaker that may have routed audio elsewhere.
• Check that voice mode isn’t set to Off at the bottom of the screen.

The voice talks over my music / navigation

This is a known limitation of the speech system on iOS. If it becomes disruptive, switch to Off and rely on the visual display, or use Speak Every 10 so it speaks less often.

Why does the app say “Good Morning” / “Good Afternoon” when I open it?

That’s the welcome greeting based on the time of day. It plays once per launch.

Turn Indicators

How do the turn arrows work?

The app watches your compass heading. When you change direction by more than about 25° within two seconds, the matching turn arrow lights up yellow for a few seconds.

The turn arrows don’t light up / show the wrong direction

The arrows depend on your iPhone’s compass, which can be thrown off by:

• Magnets in phone cases, mounts, or wallets
• Metal dashboards or car frames
• Other electronics nearby

To recalibrate the compass: Open Apple’s Compass app, then move your phone in a figure-8 pattern until the calibration screen disappears. Then come back to Speak N Speed HUD.

If you’ve never granted the app permission to use your heading, the arrows won’t work — see the location permission steps above.

0-60 Timer

How do I use the 0-60 timer?

The 0-60 timer mode is included in a future update. When enabled, it automatically:

1. Starts the clock when you begin moving (above 1 MPH).
2. Stops and announces your time the moment you cross 60 MPH.
3. Saves the result to your history.

For safety, only do 0-60 runs on a closed course or other safe, legal location.

Display & Layout

The screen goes black while I’m driving

The app keeps the screen on while it’s open, but if you switch to another app or lock the phone, iOS will turn off the screen normally. Keep Speak N Speed HUD in the foreground while driving.

The numbers are hard to read in sunlight

Turn your iPhone’s brightness all the way up. Settings → Display & Brightness → Brightness slider, or swipe down from the top-right and drag the brightness slider up. You can also disable Auto-Brightness at Settings → Accessibility → Display & Text Size → Auto-Brightness.

Can I use the app in landscape?

Yes. Rotate your phone and the display will rotate to match. The compass also re-calibrates to your new orientation automatically.

The app is using the wrong unit

Tap the unit you want at the top of the screen (MPH, KM/H, or M/S). Your choice is remembered until you change it.

Battery & Performance

The app drains my battery quickly

GPS and a constantly-on screen both use power. To extend battery life:

• Plug your phone into a car charger while driving.
• Lower the screen brightness.
• Close other apps running in the background.

Does the app work in the background?

No. To keep your data private and your battery healthy, the app stops using GPS when you switch away from it or lock your phone.

Privacy

Does the app track me or share my location?

No. All location data stays on your device. The app does not upload, store, or share your speed or location with anyone.

What permissions does the app need?

Only Location — While Using the App, which is required to read your speed and heading from GPS.
