Look and Listen Times Table — Help & Troubleshooting
Look and Listen Times Table is a simple practice app for learning multiplication tables from 1 to 12. Tap a button to see and hear the next fact in that table.

Using the App
The main screen
- The display panel at the top shows the current question and answer (e.g. 7 × 3 = 21).
- The 1–12 grid has one button for each times table. Each button shows the next fact you’ll be tested on, for example 4 × 1 = ?
- Random picks a random table (1–12) and reads out the next fact for it.
- Voice cycles through the available speaking voices.
How the buttons work
Each table button remembers where you are in that table. The first time you tap 3, you’ll get 3 × 1. Tap it again and you’ll get 3 × 2, then 3 × 3, and so on up to 3 × 12. After 12, it loops back to 3 × 1.
Each table button keeps its own count, so you can mix and match. Tapping the 5 button doesn’t affect where you are in the 7 table.
Changing the voice
Tap the Voice button to switch between speakers. The available voices are:
- Default — uses your device’s current system voice
- Karen — Australian English
- Daniel — British English
- Moira — Irish English
- Samantha — American English
- Tessa — South African English
Each tap moves to the next voice in the list, and the button label updates to show which one is selected.
Troubleshooting
I don’t hear any sound
- Check the silent switch. On iPhone, flip the ringer/silent switch on the side of the device to the “on” (ring) position. The app uses the system speech synthesizer, so it follows the silent switch setting.
- Turn the volume up. Press the volume-up button while the app is open so you’re adjusting the media volume, not the ringer.
- Disconnect Bluetooth audio. If the device is paired with AirPods, a car stereo, or a speaker that’s out of range or powered off, audio will be sent there instead. Disconnect or move closer.
- Try a different voice. Tap the Voice button to cycle to another voice. If only one voice is silent, that voice may not be fully installed on your device — see the next section.
A specific voice sounds robotic, low quality, or doesn’t speak
iOS downloads enhanced speech voices on demand. If a voice hasn’t been downloaded yet, iOS will fall back to a basic version or skip it.
To download a higher-quality voice:
- Open the Settings app.
- Go to Accessibility → Spoken Content → Voices → English.
- Tap the voice you want (Karen, Daniel, Moira, Samantha, or Tessa) and tap the download/cloud icon next to a quality level such as Enhanced or Premium.
- Return to Look and Listen Times Table and try that voice again.
The voice button doesn’t change voices
Tap the button once and wait a moment — the label updates to the new voice’s name. If the spoken voice still sounds the same, the next voice in the list may not be installed on your device (see above). Tap again to skip to the next one.
The button still says × 1 even though I’ve tapped it
The label shows the next question, not the one you just answered. After you tap 3 × 1 = ?, the display reads 3 × 1 = 3 and the button updates to 3 × 2 = ? for the next tap.
The numbers seem to be skipping around
Each of the 12 table buttons tracks its own progress independently. If you tap the 4 button and then the 7 button, you’ll get the next fact in each table — they don’t share a counter.
The app is speaking too quickly or too slowly
Look and Listen Times Table uses the speaking rate from your device’s accessibility settings. To adjust it:
- Open the Settings app.
- Go to Accessibility → Spoken Content → Speaking Rate.
- Drag the slider toward the tortoise (slower) or hare (faster).
The text on screen is too small
The app supports Dynamic Type. To make text larger:
- Open the Settings app.
- Go to Display & Brightness → Text Size.
- Drag the slider to the right.
For even larger text, turn on Accessibility → Display & Text Size → Larger Text.
The app crashes or freezes
- Force-close the app by swiping it away from the App Switcher, then reopen it.
- Restart your device.
- Make sure your device is running a supported version of iOS / iPadOS. Install any available updates from Settings → General → Software Update.
- If the problem persists, delete the app and reinstall it from the App Store. (No progress is saved between sessions, so nothing will be lost.)
Frequently Asked Questions
Does the app store my progress?
No. Each time you open the app, every table button starts again at × 1. The app doesn’t collect, store, or transmit any personal information.
Does the app need an internet connection?
No. Look and Listen Times Table works completely offline. The only time you need a connection is to download additional speech voices from Apple (see above).
