MotorMorph – Help and troubleshooting Guide

Pick a vehicle and your car sounds like it. The engine follows your real speed and turns — no recordings, everything is generated live on your device.

Getting Started

  1. Mount your phone in a car mount (or hand it to a passenger).
  2. Allow location when prompted — MotorMorph uses your speed to drive the engine sound.
  3. Pick a vehicle from the grid of twelve.
  4. Start driving. The engine idles when stopped, revs and shifts as you speed up, and reacts when you corner.
  5. Tap the honk button any time for that vehicle’s horn.

Not moving? Turn on “Try it parked” to play with everything using a speed slider and a hold-to-turn button.

How It Works

Understanding the behavior makes everything else make sense:

  • Speed comes from GPS. As you go faster, the engine revs higher and shifts gears; as you slow down, it burbles on the overrun.
  • Turns are detected by your phone’s motion sensors (with GPS heading as a backup). Cornering triggers a tire squeal, whistle, roar, or each vehicle’s own turn sound.
  • The driver never needs to touch the screen. The sound reacts on its own. Let a passenger pick vehicles and press honks.
Driver safety: Keep your eyes on the road. Set your vehicle before you go, or let a passenger handle the fun.

Troubleshooting

No engine sound while driving

Work through these in order:

  1. Check the mute button (top-right speaker icon) and the volume slider in Settings (gear icon).
  2. Check your phone’s volume with the physical buttons. MotorMorph plays even when your silent switch is on, but the volume buttons still apply.
  3. Confirm location is allowed: iOS Settings → MotorMorph → Location → While Using the App (or Always for locked-screen use).
  4. Get a clear GPS signal. In a parking garage, tunnel, or dense city start, GPS can take a moment to lock. Sound builds once you’re moving in the open.
  5. You need to be moving. At a standstill the vehicle idles quietly by design. The engine comes alive as your speed climbs.
The engine stays quiet / speed reads 0
  • GPS reports speed only when it has a good fix. Wait until you’re outdoors and moving above walking pace.
  • Very slow speeds (under ~1 mph) read as 0 to avoid jitter — this is normal.
  • If you’re testing indoors, use “Try it parked” instead.
Turning sounds don’t trigger
  • Turn effects only play while the car is actually moving — so waving the phone around while parked won’t set them off.
  • Gentle, sweeping turns may not cross the threshold. Tighter corners trigger the effect more reliably.
  • If your phone is loose in a cupholder or bag, motion detection is less accurate; a secured mount works best.
  • To hear turn sounds on demand, use the “Turn!” button in “Try it parked” mode.
Sound stops when the screen locks

MotorMorph is built to keep playing with the screen locked while mounted. For this to work, set iOS Settings → MotorMorph → Location to Always, which allows the app to keep reading speed in the background.

With location set only to “While Using,” iOS may pause updates when the screen locks.

Sound cuts out or stutters
  • Another audio app (music, navigation, a phone call) may be interrupting the audio. Pause other audio apps, then reopen MotorMorph.
  • If it doesn’t recover, fully close MotorMorph (swipe it away in the app switcher) and relaunch.
No vibration / haptics
  • Engine rumble uses your phone’s haptic hardware. iPad and some older iPhones don’t support it, so you’ll get sound without vibration — this is expected.
  • Make sure iOS Settings → Sounds & Haptics → System Haptics is on.
  • Haptics are subtle at idle and grow stronger as you speed up and corner.
The screen dims or locks on its own

MotorMorph keeps the screen awake while open so you can glance at your speed. If it still dims, check your Low Power Mode setting, which can override this.

What is “Try it parked”?

A demo mode for when you’re not driving. It replaces GPS with a speed slider and a press-and-hold “Turn!” button, so you can preview every vehicle and sound from anywhere. It turns on automatically if location access is denied.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does MotorMorph track or share my location?

No. Your location is used only, in the moment, to read your speed for the engine sound. It is never stored, never transmitted, and never leaves your device. There are no accounts, no analytics, and no network connections.

Why does it ask for location and motion access?

Location provides your speed; motion sensors detect turns. Both are used purely to make the sounds react to your driving.

Why does it need “Always” location / background permission?

So the engine keeps playing when your screen locks during a drive — the main way people use the app while mounted in a car. Nothing is collected in the background; it only reads speed.

Are the sounds real recordings?

No. Every engine is synthesized live on your device, so it reacts instantly and never loops or repeats.

Can I switch between mph and km/h?

Yes — open Settings (gear icon) and choose your speed unit.

Does it work in landscape?

Yes, in both portrait and landscape.

Will it drain my battery?

Using GPS and audio continuously does use more battery than an idle phone. For long drives, keep your phone on the car charger.

Is it safe to use while driving?

MotorMorph is designed so the driver never has to touch the screen — the sound follows your driving automatically. Set your vehicle before you go, or let a passenger handle vehicle changes and honks. Always keep your attention on the road and obey all traffic laws.
