Table of Contents
Getting Started
Noise Therapy has five tabs along the bottom of the screen:
| Tab | What it does |
|---|---|
| Welcome | Quick walkthrough of the app’s features |
| Hearing Test | Calibrate your volume and test your hearing across 6 frequencies |
| Noise Therapy | Play personalized White or Pink noise tuned to your hearing profile |
| Nature | Layer up to 8 procedurally generated nature sounds |
| Music | Get an Apple Music EQ preset recommendation based on your hearing |
Recommended first steps:
- Put on a good pair of headphones (wired or wireless).
- Open the Hearing Test tab and complete calibration + the test.
- Tap Create Custom EQ from Test — this saves your profile.
- Explore the Noise Therapy, Nature, and Music tabs.
The Hearing Test
The Hearing Test has three phases: Calibration, Testing, and Summary.
Phase 1 — Calibration
You set a comfortable baseline volume by playing white noise and adjusting the device volume slider.
- Put your headphones on.
- Tap Play White Noise.
- Use the on-screen volume slider (it controls device volume) to find a level that is comfortable and quiet — not loud.
- Tap Stop White Noise, then Continue to Test.
Why this matters: All test results depend on this baseline. If you crank the volume up here, every threshold reading will be skewed loud.
Phase 2 — Testing
You’ll test six frequencies in order: 250 Hz, 500 Hz, 1 kHz, 2 kHz, 4 kHz, 8 kHz.
For each frequency:
- Tap Play Tone.
- Use the + and − buttons to adjust the level (in dB).
- Find the quietest level where you can still just barely hear the tone.
- Tap Confirm This Level to lock it in and move to the next frequency.
Tone Mode (Wave / Pulse):
- Wave — continuous tone.
- Pulse — 500 ms on, 500 ms off. Easier to distinguish from background noise or tinnitus.
Advanced Options — Test Ear:
- Expand Advanced Options to switch between Both Ears, Left Ear, or Right Ear.
- Test each ear separately for a more detailed profile.
Phase 3 — Summary
You’ll see your Hearing EQ Profile as a graph and per-frequency dB readings.
- Tap Create Custom EQ from Test to save the profile and jump to the Noise Therapy tab.
- Tap Reset Test to clear results and start over.
Noise Therapy (White / Pink Noise)
Noise Therapy plays White or Pink noise with an EQ boost tailored to your hearing profile — frequencies you struggle to hear are boosted, up to +24 dB.
Noise Types
- White Noise — equal energy at all frequencies. Bright, hissy, like TV static. Effective for masking high-pitched tinnitus.
- Pink Noise — equal energy per octave (3 dB-per-octave rolloff). Deeper, more balanced, like steady rainfall. More comfortable for extended listening and sleep.
Controls
- Play / Stop — start or stop playback.
- Volume slider — adjust loudness (0–100%).
- Channel — choose where the sound plays:
- Both — standard stereo.
- Left — left ear only.
- Right — right ear only.
- Bounce — alternates between left and right every 3 seconds (useful for bilateral tinnitus stimulation).
- Real-Time Analyzer — shows the frequency spectrum live while playing.
Current EQ Section
The Current EQ panel shows your EQ boost profile based on your hearing test. Each test frequency shows how much boost (in dB) is being applied.
“No hearing test data”? You need to run the Hearing Test first. Go to the Hearing Test tab and complete the test.
Nature Sounds
Eight procedurally generated nature sounds you can play and layer in any combination:
| Sound | Description |
|---|---|
| Rain | Steady rainfall with sparse droplet transients |
| Ocean | Slow rolling waves with a ~0.09 Hz modulation |
| Lake | Gentle lapping water and subtle ripples |
| Fire | Low rumble with random crackle pops |
| Wind | Band-passed gusts through trees |
| Stream | Burbling brook with intermittent gurgles |
| Crickets | Pulsed sine pair (4.5 kHz / 5.2 kHz) for a summer-night feel |
| Waterfall | Heavy continuous pink noise |
Each sound has its own play button and volume slider. You can layer multiple sounds together — try Rain + Fire, or Stream + Crickets.
Tap Stop All at the bottom to silence everything at once.
Tip: Nature sounds are mixed with
.mixWithOthers, so they will play alongside other apps’ audio if needed.
Music EQ Recommendations
The Music tab compares your hearing profile to all 24 Apple Music EQ presets and recommends the best match.
You’ll see:
- The recommended preset name (e.g., “Treble Booster”, “Vocal Booster”).
- A Match Analysis with your match percentage and a side-by-side comparison of bass / mid / treble boost between your profile and the preset.
- Other Good Matches — three alternative presets you can try.
How to apply the recommended preset
The app cannot change Apple Music’s EQ for you — Apple requires you to do this manually:
- Open the iOS Settings app.
- Scroll to and tap Music.
- Tap EQ.
- Select the recommended preset from the list.
The preset will apply to all music played through the Apple Music app.
“No hearing test data”? Run the Hearing Test first — the recommendation depends on your thresholds.
Audio & Playback Troubleshooting
I don’t hear anything
- Check that your device is not on silent mode (the Ring/Silent switch on the side, or Control Center).
- Make sure the device volume is turned up.
- If using Bluetooth headphones, confirm they are connected and selected as the output (Control Center → AirPlay icon in the audio card).
- For Noise Therapy: make sure you’ve completed the hearing test — playback is disabled until you have a saved profile.
- Try switching to a different noise type or sound and back.
The sound is too quiet (even at max volume)
- Re-do the calibration step at the start of the Hearing Test — your baseline may have been set too low.
- In Noise Therapy, raise the in-app Volume slider to 100% and then raise device volume.
- Check Settings → Music → EQ — an aggressive Treble Reducer or Bass Reducer can affect perceived loudness.
- iOS Volume Limit (Settings → Sounds & Haptics → Headphone Safety) can cap output. Disable or raise the limit.
The sound is distorting / clipping
- Lower the in-app Volume slider in the Noise Therapy tab.
- If your hearing profile shows very high thresholds (poor hearing) across the board, the EQ may be boosting some frequencies by +24 dB, which can clip at high volumes. Lower the volume slider to compensate.
Audio cuts out when another app plays sound
- Noise Therapy and the Hearing Test use exclusive audio (they will stop when other audio starts).
- Nature Sounds are set to mix with other audio — they should continue playing.
- If audio cuts out unexpectedly, return to the app and tap Play again.
Audio stops when I lock the screen
This is expected behavior in the current version. Keep the app open in the foreground to maintain continuous playback. Background audio support is being evaluated for a future update.
Bluetooth headphones have a delay / echo
- Bluetooth introduces latency that can make the RTA visualization look out of sync with what you hear — this is normal and does not affect the sound itself.
- For the Hearing Test, wired headphones are strongly recommended for the most accurate results.
Hearing Test Troubleshooting
I can hear the tone even at the lowest level (−80 dB)
- You may be in a noisy environment — find a quieter room.
- Your headphone volume may be set too high. Re-do calibration and pick a quieter baseline.
- Some headphones have very high sensitivity. Try a different pair if available.
- Keep lowering until you genuinely struggle to hear the tone, then confirm.
I can’t hear the tone even at the loudest level (0 dB)
- Your device volume may be too low — turn it up before tapping Play Tone.
- Make sure headphones are connected and you’ve selected the correct output device.
- If you genuinely cannot hear at 0 dB, that’s a legitimate result — confirm and move on. The app will boost that frequency in the Noise Therapy tab.
- If results seem unrealistic, consider consulting an audiologist (see Medical Disclaimer).
Background noise is making it hard to tell
- Switch to Pulse mode (500 ms on / 500 ms off) — the on/off pattern is easier to distinguish from constant background noise or tinnitus.
- Move to a quieter room.
The test results don’t feel accurate
- Re-do the calibration step — most accuracy issues come from baseline volume drift.
- Use the same headphones throughout the test.
- Try testing each ear separately via Advanced Options → Test Ear.
- Retake the test on a different day — fatigue and ear pressure can affect thresholds.
How do I retake the test?
- Go to the Hearing Test tab.
- If you’re already on the Summary screen, tap Reset Test.
- Otherwise, complete or skip through to the Summary and tap Reset Test, then start fresh from Calibration.
General Troubleshooting
The app crashed or froze
- Force-quit and reopen: swipe up from the bottom of the screen and swipe Noise Therapy off the top.
- Restart your device.
- Make sure you’re running the latest version from the App Store.
I lost my hearing test results
Your hearing thresholds are stored on-device. They can be lost if:
- You uninstalled and reinstalled the app.
- You tapped Reset Test on the Summary screen.
- You restored the device from a backup that didn’t include app data.
Solution: re-run the Hearing Test.
My EQ recommendation changed
The Music EQ recommendation is recalculated every time you visit the Music tab, based on your current saved thresholds. If you retook the test, the recommendation will reflect the new profile.
Tab labels or text look cut off
- Try rotating the device.
- Increase or decrease the system text size in Settings → Display & Brightness → Text Size.
Privacy & Data
- All hearing test data is stored locally on your device using
UserDefaults. - Noise Therapy does not transmit your hearing profile, audio, or any personal information off-device.
- The app does not require an account or sign-in.
- Nature sounds are generated procedurally in real time — no audio files are downloaded.
- The app does not access your music library or Apple Music account; the Music tab only recommends an EQ preset that you apply yourself in iOS Settings.
